The one thing that unites Town and Gown in Oxford is the excellence of the city’s drinking establishments. Below is a list of the 5 best pubs in Oxford, all within walking (or should we say crawling) distance of your Urbane apartment.

1. The Bear
6 Alfred Street, OX1 4EH. Tel: 01865 728164
11 minutes’ walk from your Urbane apartment
Oxford’s oldest pub has been dispensing ale since 1242 and its low ceilings pay testimony to this fact, (so anyone over 6 feet tall is advised to keep a low profile). What the Bear lacks in size, it more than makes up for with old world charm combined with a wide selection of real ales and delicious home-cooked traditional pub fare. The Bear is also famous for its unusual collection of ties which cover virtually every wall and the ceiling.
Urbane fact: Legend has it that it got its name from a former landlord’s pet bear!

2. The Turf Tavern
4-5 Bath Place, OX1 3SU. Tel: 01865 243235
15 minutes’ walk from your Urbane apartment (providing you don’t get lost).
Oxford’s best-known hidden secret is located down a series of narrow, pedestrian-only alleyways, (so we recommend using GPS!) Once discovered, The Turf is rarely forgotten; this family-friendly venue has a delightful beer garden, excellent menu and offers around a dozen cask ales.
Urbane fact: This where Bill Clinton legendarily smoked, (but didn’t inhale) marijuana!

Most famous for being the favourite drinking hole of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis and their fellow writers called ‘The Inklings’, The Eagle and Child still serves up a truly magical atmosphere. An excellent menu offers a combination of classic British dishes together with all year round favourites. Add to this an unparalleled selection of cask ales and 25 carefully chosen guest ales and relax in an establishment steeped in history.

4. The Head of the River
Folly Bridge, Oxford OX1 4LB. Tel: 01865 721600
15 minutes’ walk from your Urbane apartment
One of Oxford’s most popular riverside pubs, the Head of the River offers both indoor and outdoor seating; where you can sit, relax and watch the world float by. The home-made menu covers a variety of dishes to suit everyone’s tastes, including the famous venison burger; all washed down with Fullers’ ales and an extensive drinks menu.
